Inspired by reading Wiesel's epic The Jews of Silence, Rabbi Porath traveled to Moscow for Simchat Torah in 1968, and dedicated his life's work to Soviet and Russian Jews. As a staff member of the Joint Distribution Committee's Russian Department, he visited Russia 175 times.
